Aiming for a resilient and sustainable society
MS&AD Sustainability Contest 2024
A Total of 363 Unique
Initiatives from Inside and Outside Japan Pursue both Sustainability and Profitability
MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, Inc.

MS&AD has a strong presence in Japan’s non-life insurance market. The Group has set forth the goal of becoming a corporate group supporting a resilient and sustainable society by 2030 and holds the MS&AD Sustainability Contest with all Group employees, both in Japan and overseas. This was the seventh time the contest has been held. Its theme was “earnings power,” and 363 initiatives were gathered from inside and outside Japan for preliminary selection. In the final competition held on November 25, 2024, seven finalists presented their excellent initiatives that contribute to sustainability through business activities.
Raising business value leads to sustainable social value
The contest was started in 2018, and 2024 was the seventh time it has been held. This year’s theme was “earnings power.” Sustainability tends to be discussed from the standpoint of social contribution, but increasing earnings as a business can generate social value continuously in a sustainable manner. The selections were made from this perspective as well.
There were 363 entries, including entries from overseas, and in the competition held both in person and online, seven presented their unique initiatives related to sustainability. Responding to feedback from people who wanted to know more about the award-winning initiatives and wanted the opportunity to directly ask questions, the contest was divided into Section 1 Booth Format and Section 2 Presentation Format, which was a major change for this year.
In Section 1, participants had the opportunity to go to booths whose initiatives they were interested in to see presentations and hold conversations. The booths were brimming with activity with so many participants, and there was lively, two-way communication regardless of position or rank among executives, employees and prospective employees, which was highly interesting.
For Section 2, Presentation Format, representatives of the seven initiatives got up on stage and passionately presented in their own words what prompted their ideas and how they see the future beyond the initiative.
They spoke in front of around 140 employees, executives, and prospective employees participating from the MS&AD Group, along with around 600 people viewing online.
The entry selected for the Grand Prize based on an online vote of participants following the presentation was from the Future Strategy Creation Department at Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance: “A measure to address aging infrastructure nationwide! Development of a bridge inspection support tool using AI.”
The following introduces this initiative along with the six other unique initiatives selected for a presentation.

Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Co., Ltd.
A measure to address aging infrastructure nationwide! Development of a bridge inspection support tool using AI
Go Maehata
Of the around 730,000 bridges in Japan, around 59% of them will be over 50 years old by 2032. There is growing demand in society for solutions that address the issue of aging bridges to ensure safety in our everyday lives.
Meanwhile, with the declining working-age population and advancing rural depopulation, local governments face the problem of a shortage of officials and technicians to conduct the inspections, along with budgetary limits. There was also an issue of variation in the judgment of soundness, as visual inspections by human inspectors depend on the inspector’s experience and the conditions at the site.
Tackling these issues, the Future Strategy Creation Department at Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance and the Aioi R&D Lab at Oxford joined together with Susono City in Shizuoka Prefecture and the U.K.’s Mind Foundry to develop a bridge inspection support tool using AI.

Function development is underway to have AI inspect and quantify damages on the bridge and automatically determine the bridge’s soundness among the bridge inspection processes by taking photos of the bridge and uploading them to the app. The support tool was verified by Susono City in 2024, and work efficiency was estimated to improve by around 30%. Based on the feedback, improvements are being made, and the department plans to expand the service to all municipalities starting in fiscal 2025.
Many municipalities must be feeling the challenge of bridge inspection and the need for this solution. Along with its accelerated application in the AI field, this initiative was determined to be worthy of the Grand Prize, in addition to the standpoint of commercialization potential and future profitability.
Aspiring to create a comprehensive infrastructure management tool that shows a city’s infrastructure data at a single glance
At the Future Strategy Creation Department and Aioi R&D Lab, research and development are being carried out in collaboration with diverse partners, including Mind Foundry, an AI venture spun out from Oxford University, to solve social issues in a wide variety of areas not confined to insurance.
Measures for aging bridges and roads are a universal issue not limited to Japan, and with the robust support of Susono City, which faced similar challenges, the winning initiative was successfully carried out. In addition, for AI model development, the reporting format for bridge inspections was unified nationwide, allowing past inspection data to be utilized as high-quality learning data.
Going forward, while enhancing the precision of AI, the department wants to expand the scope to cover public infrastructure other than bridges, such as road signs, and develop the tool into a comprehensive infrastructure management tool that shows a city’s infrastructure data at a glance. The idea is for the tool to help not only daily living but to minimize damage from large-scale disasters and contribute to area disaster prevention and mitigation.
Theme Awards go to diverse initiatives from young employees to veterans and from domestic to overseas
We will next introduce six initiatives selected for Excellence Awards. Until 2023, the same judging standards were used, but to solicit more ideas from a wider range of initiatives this year, five Theme Awards were established. This led to entries from a wide range of age groups, from young employees to veterans.

MS Amlin Underwriting Limited
Initiative by MS AUL for climate change finance and responsible underwriting
Amir Sethu
Climate change is a major issue in contemporary society and will have a major effect on how we live in the future. MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS AUL), a UK (Lloyd’s) subsidiary of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, is engaged in climate change financing, recognizing a new business opportunity in responding to climate change from an insurance company perspective. Insurance underwriting the credit risk on debt owed by the Ecuador government allowed the government to procure funds at lower interest rates than normal, enabling it to allocate the 3 billion dollars in savings (approx. 46.0 billion yen) to marine protection around the Galápagos Islands, a UNESCO protected reserve and to fund responses to climate change. This was one successful example.

With women getting married later in life due to their greater involvement and advancement at work, the observation was made that if insurance existed for freezing eggs, there would be fewer people worried about infertility. So, the Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Lifebank began providing insurance exclusively for freezing eggs. This is the first time in the industry that insurance is being provided to an egg-freezing business, so it drew a lot of attention with the story being picked up by various media, including the Nikkei Shimbun, Forbes, and Nikkei Cross Woman, which helped raise the corporate value of the MS&AD Group. This insurance was successfully commercialized through the capabilities of various departments within the company. It is a unique initiative that uses a new idea to further expand the scope of the insurance business.

While child labor, forced labor and other human rights risks have become a business issue, human rights due diligence has presented a major challenge. In 2024, MS&AD InterRisk Research and Consulting joined with the U.K.’s Ground Truth Intelligence Ltd., an investee of MS&AD Ventures, to start the Supplier Human Rights Infringement Risk Survey Service. Conducted by surveyors proficient in the local language, culture, and customs, companies located around the world are individually investigated on whether or not human rights are being infringed upon, and results are reported. The service has received many inquiries from domestic manufacturers and infrastructure-related companies. In recent years, supply chains have become global in scale, and many companies are dealing with their increasing complexity. With this the case, there are bound to be a large number of companies with a latent need for this service.

Using AI to express stock price trends as music
The future of stock investing to expand with music
Yuki Hiramatsu
With NISA (small-amount, tax-exempt investment vehicle) expanding, more people took an interest in investing in 2024. Most information used in stock investing is expressed as visual information, and tracing trends over the long term can be a big burden. Missing out on the right time to invest while doing something else can be an issue. As a solution to these problems, at Mitsui Sumitomo Aioi Life Insurance, joint research was conducted with Mr. Nakagawa and Mr. Takano of the Innovation Lab Department at Nomura Asset Management and Mr. Nakamura from Kyoto University (now an associate professor at Kyushu University) to develop a solution that expresses stock information from multiple companies as music using AI. The details of the solution were announced at the 2024 Annual Conference of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence. Because it prevents missing the right time to invest, it is a solution that helps boost the earnings power of various customers.

School club activities face the issues of fewer opportunities for activities due to the low birthrate and of not being able to receive adequate instruction due to teachers working long hours and a lack of knowledge and experience. Against this backdrop, in 2024, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance joined with Sports Data Bank and Japan Post to establish a consortium supporting the transition of after-school club activities to regional club activities, a first in Japan. The group started providing a menu of items, including encouraging participants to enroll in sports safety insurance and an e-learning program for risk measures to avoid or mitigate risk. The first initiative of the consortium was concluding a partnership agreement with the Okinawa Prefectural Board of Education. Through this activity, there is a strong possibility for increasing contact points between Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance with local governments, instructors, middle school students, and their parents or guardians, and it was judged as being expected to raise the brand power of the MS&AD Group overall.

With a shortage of personnel becoming a reality due to a declining working-age population, strengthening the labor force of people aged 65 and older is a major issue in all of Japan. With the legal regime making headway, starting with amendments to the Act on Employment Security of Elderly Persons in 2021, in fiscal 2022, MS&AD Staff Service created a senior dispatch program for job assignments within the Group. As of November 2024, 301 staff members are working at 12 Group companies. Along with creating an environment that allows employees aged 65 and older to continue working with vitality, the program has succeeded in enabling Group companies to secure personnel with experience and skills who can be put to use right away. This initiative approached the company’s business power and earnings power from the standpoint of the effective use of human resources.

Representative Director, President & Group CEO
Shinichiro Funabiki
At the conclusion of the MS&AD Sustainability Contest 2024, Group CEO Shinichiro Funabiki took the podium.
CEO Funabiki commented: “With everyone giving it their all, this year’s contest was wonderful. There were many projects that I would never have thought of, so I was very impressed. These initiatives would have never come about if people did not regularly think of sustainability as their own issue. Like these seven presentations today, I expect next year’s contest to be filled with wonderful ideas that touch the heartstrings of society.” With a rousing round of applause, the contest was brought to an end.

The Sustainability Contest 2024 was a major success. The event was primarily planned and administered by Kohei Hoshino and Mami Teraoka of the Corporate Sustainability Department in MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings. In the following, they reflect back on the contest.
“Each and every initiative that was entered was a wonderful idea. I think it was packed with the elements that will be the strengths of the Group going forward. Even initiatives that did not win awards, I am confident that when they are further developed, they will help to solve social issues as company businesses. I want to continue offering support through the Corporate Sustainability Department.” (Ms. Teraoka)
“This year’s theme was ‘earnings power,’ but I feel the challenge is how to link business with solving social issues. This contest is an opportunity to proactively think up new initiatives to solve various social issues. At the same time, feedback on the business side will lead to major reforms in business styles. I plan to promote such opportunities going forward.” (Mr. Hoshino)
